struck a pact along w deszo and friedrich that granted them magic & immortality, attempted to unite the cockatrice tribes under his kingship but it all ended in bloody genocide conveniently blamed on thalos

after a large stint being a useless bit of statuary in the ruins of selendi was summoned to arthasia, helped deszo & friedrich with their experiments and rule, however he always operated behind the scenes and never in public

uses a kind of illusion magic to appear as a (rather tall) arthasian, none of his bodyparts actually disappear but people.. unconsciously avoid walking into say his big ol tail and just see a human

hes pretty snarky and self absorbed. a total pompous ass.

cares deeply for his ward sonja, who he sees as a daughter

he cant disobey deszo since their lives are linked, and if deszo dies so will mana. despite having been alive for hundreds of years, manas fear of death has only grown (especially since immortals like him are at risk of sudden decay and death AT ANY MOMENT)

Laslo: hes a saalynian faun with dwarfism (due to being part of a “breeding program” in the arthasian empire, and the nobles find the dwarf fauns Oh So Novel). he grew up a slave in the marches near saalyn, and the minor lord he served under was taken in a skirmish, and all saalynians in slavery were freed.. he works with saalynian guerilla forces, specifically part of the albatross’ group. he is a tinker and is very good with his hands, usually working w/ demolitions (OH BOY BOMBS!!). hmm he doesnt have much of a sense of humor and therefore… ends up the butt of a lot of lorants jokes. but they are ~pals~ so its ok i guess. laslo has a tendency to get over-serious, in contrast to lorant who can sometimes be.. too light-hearted!! (actually has caused a lot of trouble Ha Ha Lorant You Nerd)

Sieg: sieg is the son of manafrier & illea. he grew up a spoiled prince brat until uh.. his fathers reign ended in the deaths of almost all of the cockatrices. im.. still working out a lot of the details of his/manas backstory but!!! since he was born with the ophelia strain (as a result of his mother being a human) deszo ends up using him as part of his eugenics projects. mana gave sieg over to deszo because he is a Horrible Father and became disgusted with sieg after illea’s betrayal. for the next 200 odd years sieg was experimented on and prettyyy much tortured/used as a weapon by deszo, and all that really drives him anymore is hatred. Typical Shonen Anime. his life is renewed every 10 or so years through blood magic and sacrifices, since people with the ophelia strain usually have shortened lifespans, so he needs more than, say, mana or deszo. also he has runes carved into various parts of his body that keep him under check, although half of that power belonged to friedrich so after friedrichs death sieg slowly learns ways around deszos influence. he wants to kill his father and deszo and take down the arthasian empire for all that it has done to him

Alexander: he is one of kains knights, an orphan from yasa. he ends up part of the richard/teodor faction and turns against kain. ASIDE FROM THAT IDK HE ISNT SUPER EXCITING he can play a mean lute

Ambrose: another one of kains knights, hes one of the youngest of the group and slightly disillusioned by the stereotypes of chivalry. he desperately wants to impress kain and.. ends up getting killed in his first battle as a result Yay :^) but uhh Before That he hangs around reuben, rufus, helmut, and co a lot, trying very hard to show off around the older boys but usually just making a fool of himself. he just wants to be cool ok!!! hes a good kid though, and despite what a suck up he is he means well.. he can be kind of a klutz though HAHA and so as a page he didnt exactly.. exceed, but his swordsmanship more than made up for it. … he still dies though. Everyone Dies.

Brynwall is an old fortress from pre-Arthasian conquest of Kalyndria, although it was restructured as a border fortress when SaaLyn was at its peak. During the most recent uprising it’s resumed that role, and is a military base. It is famed for a certain brigade led by Kain (often called the “Swan Knights” in jest because they’re a bunch of ~handsome young poufs—er, men~), very disciplined men who ride a specialized mount for the mountainous terrain of the Arthasian marches. Stags! Oh god what even are words I’m sorry does this make sense…

Where are Reuben and Kain fleeing toward? Now that you have the map, YOU CAN PROPERLY SHOW ME AND I CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT'S HAPPEN!

Or, well, from Imperial forces/Lord Richard, who branded Kain as a heretic and “exposed him” so um, Rufus and Reuben steal him away and flee as far as they can. … but Rufus gets his head chopped off OOPS SPOILERS!! Also Teodor helps them escape/distracts search time/yadda/words it’s 6am.

Originally from Debrezna in Yasa.
Served as advisor and Minister of Affairs to Emperor Friedrich III Eirwel, working behind the scenes to arrange any and everything the emperor asks of him. It’s his business to know every little thing that goes on in the Empire.
Secretly the emperor’s lover.
He believes wholly and absolutely in the Arthasian Empire and will do anything to secure it power.
Heads the research behind the wandering gods and inherent magic, the Ophelia Strain, and Arthasia’s eugenics project. He also arranged all of Friedrich III’s bastards—trying to breed more children with magical potential.
After the emperor’s death and his heir’s disappearance (proclaimed dead), Deszo was left in charge of heir Rudolf’s education and preparation for rule etc etc
Has Manafrier bound to his will— each of them gained immortality through a pact with a wandering god sealed with blood magic (possible through Emperor Friedrich, who also gained immortality). Deszo was given the power to revive/renew their bodies if they were “killed”, although he is unable to use any destructive magics like they can.

SaaLyn is an ex-colony, and it regained its lands in a rebellion that was in many ways due to the totalitarian rule of Arthasia. Of course, Arthasia wants the lands back for their rich natural resources (largely metals). Also it doesn’t take kindly to rebels, and the church views SaaLyni as subhumans and in need of redemption, because the Aelmidean is the one true path and gosh wouldn’t you guys rather not end up in the deepest hells??

The Empire also has a eugenics program (which most of the world views as unnatural, but hey, cheap slaves—sorry i mean “household servants”—but SaaLyn views as fucking awful especially since the people in this program come from SaaLyni backgrounds).

Are there any ongoing wars going on?

Currently there is a standstill in the war between Arthasia and SaaLyn, although there’s plenty of espionage and guerilla movements. Both are teetering on the edge of all-out war.
